leaf lace shawl

Once upon a time in a warm cottage surrounded by thickly entwined trees, Grandma Betty sat knitting. It was a small, cozy cottage that smelled of yarn and had soothing music drifting gently through the air. Her mind flew back to years ago when Betty used the last clear needles and endlessly tangled up yarn balls (the good, reasonable ones) that untouched in a cupboard next to 50% acrylic vests she'd knit for my older sisters with frequent angry interjections... She loved knitting clothes but one of her favourite things was probably another beautiful shawl -- today there speckled leaf lace pinned out as wet grass with funny circle mosaics.

Grandma Betty was making a leaf lace shawl with beautiful green leaves that were all around her cottage. That pattern was a beautiful, conventional version of leaves woven into the shawl in an delightful and sophisticated manner which no one could help but notice. The leaves appeared to float and then dance across the shawl as Grandma Betty worked while a gentle breeze swirled them along. So it was impossible to see this hardly lovely design in the shawl and think I had brought them back to fierceness, life and wonder of nature.

Soft and cozy for chilly days

And from where Grandma Betty sat, knitting on scootered cushions at the dining room table that evening, she looked down and wondered how nice it would feel to drape over her shoulders when autumn came nipping in for a spell. Wearing it in front of the fireplace, sipping a mug of hot chocolate and feeling warm. The shawl was knitted with the softest yarn, that no matter how cold it got outside, she only felt happy and cozy in this wrap. She loved the way soft yarn felt on her hands, but she especially sensed that this shawl would be great for all those crisp fall days and colorful leaves.

My grandmother Betty was THE most delightful knitter on the planet and boy, did she go slow enough that every bumbled stitch would require hours of fixing. She realised the leaf lace shawl called for focus, and she was up to it. She wanted to make them nice because she took pride in doing a good job. As she works on her knitting, checking and rechecking;making sure that each leaf looks just right before having any meaning. My Grandmother Betty was a firm believer of taking your time to make something special and she loved the satisfaction in making things by hand.
